Gavin Newsom mocks Republican impeachment inquiry into Joe Biden as ‘student government’ as he dismisses doubts over president’s age and defends Kamala Harris
- California governor accuses Republicans of ‘student government’
- Newsom says Biden is a ‘seasoned pro’ who has overseen a ‘masterclass’
- He says Kamala Harris will ‘absolutely’ be Biden’s running mate in 2024
He also dismissed fears Biden is too old to run again, admitting that ‘voters have every right to be concerned’ about the president’s age, but adding: ‘I want a seasoned pro that knows how to get things done.’
His declarations came as a CBS News/YouGov poll showed only one third of voters believe Biden, 80, would complete a second term, and as former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi failed to offer clear backing for Harris.
Gavin Newsom said Biden and Harris would be the Democrat ticket in 2024
Biden faces an impeachment inquiry launched by Republicans who have been investigating his son Hunter’s foreign business dealings in countries including China and Ukraine while his father was vice president.
Newsom said: ‘An impeachment inquiry? Give me a break, This is student government This is a joke. Ready, fire, aim. I mean, this is a perversity with what the Founding Fathers ever conceived of and imagined. So if that’s the best they can do, give me a break.’
He was asked about Hunter using his connections, and Joe Biden joining phone calls with his son’s business partners, and Newsom said he ‘didn’t love it’.
But he said: ‘I don’t know enough about the details of that. I mean, I’ve seen a little of that. If that’s the new criteria, there are a lot of folks in a lot of industries, not just in politics, where people have family members and relationships and they are trying to parlay a little, get a little influence and benefit in that respect, that’s hardly unique.
‘I don’t love that any more than you love it or other people, I imagine, love that. We want to see a lot less of that.’
A potential Newsom 2024 candidacy has become a focus for Democrats worried about Biden’s advanced age and anemic poll numbers.

Kamala Harris will ‘absolutely’ be Joe Biden’s running mate, Newsom said
The California governor has raised his profile recently, making appearances in other states, embarking on an official trip to china, and agreeing to debate Republican 2024 candidate Ron DeSantis.
But on running himself in 2024 Newsom said: ‘The answer is no. No ambiguity. I’m not that guy. I’m just not.’
He also said Harris should ‘of course’ remain on the ticket.
‘Biden-Harris administration…a masterclass in terms of performance, bipartisan deals on infrastructure, bipartisan deals on guns and debt ceiling, on the CHIPS and Science Act,’ he said.
‘She gets to lay claim and credit to a lot of that success. The answer is absolutely.”
He added that Democrats should stop ‘navel-gazing about Joe Biden’ and ‘get going’.
‘Let’s get on the train. This train has left the proverbial station,’ Newsom said.
