A huge fire has broken out in central London today, as huge plumes of grey smoke can be seen rising into the air.

The thick smoke can be seen rising over the Victoria area of London. Fire crews from London Fire Brigade have rushed to Francis Street, Westminster, following reports of the incident.

According to eyewitnesses in the area, buildings have been evacuated. Pictures from the scene show fire crews rushing to the area to tackle the blaze.

London Fire Bridage said: “Twelve fire engines and around 80 firefighters have been called to a flat fire on Howick Place in Westminster

“Firefighters are tackling a fire on the third floor of a three storey building. 

“There is heavy traffic disruption on the surrounding roads, therefore people are advised to avoid the area. Residents are also advised to keep their windows and doors shut due to the smoke. 

“The Brigade was called at 12.53pm. Fire crews from Soho, Chelsea, Euston and other surrounding fire stations are at the scene.” 

It added: “The cause of the fire is not known at this stage.” 

Writing on X, formerly known as Twitter, one user said: “Fire in Francis Street, Victoria. We’ve been evacuated.”

Another said: “Hmm I think a building is on fire in the Victoria area.” They posted a video with smoke billowing from the building. 

“Fire in Victoria – surrounding offices (including my own) all evacuated whilst they deal with it. Six fire trucks at one point,” said another.
